Local SEO in Kenya: how to rank on Google Maps
When someone in Nairobi searches "dentist near me" or "plumber Kilimani", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. Those three get most of the calls. This guide covers the seven things that decide whether your business is one of them.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
If you haven't claimed your profile, anyone can suggest edits to it — and unclaimed profiles rarely win the top spots. Fill in every field: exact business name, address, phone, opening hours, website and a description that mentions what you do and where.
2. Pick the right primary category
Your primary category decides which searches you can appear for. A salon should choose 'Hair salon', not 'Beauty shop'. Choose the narrowest category that truly describes your main service.
3. Use the words your customers type
Kenyan customers search with a service plus an area: 'plumber Kilimani', 'dentist Westlands', 'hardware Nakuru'. Put those words naturally in your profile description, your posts and your website — never stuff them.
4. Add photos — and keep adding them
Profiles with fresh photos get more calls and direction requests. Add real photos of your team, premises and work every week, not stock images.
5. Collect reviews, and reply to every single one
Reviews are one of the strongest ranking and trust signals. Ask happy customers right after the job. Reply to every review — in English or Kiswahili — because replies show both Google and future customers that you are active.
6. Post updates on your profile
Google Business Profile posts (offers, updates, events) keep your profile fresh and can appear directly in search results. One post a week is enough to stay active.
7. Track your real position — it changes street by street
Google Maps results are personal to the searcher's location. You can be #1 at your door and invisible two kilometres away. A geo-grid scan checks your position at 25 points around your business so you know your true visibility, not just the view from your doorstep.
